Jess described her work to me as "natural, elegant, refreshing, quality, and adaptable", and I don't think I could word it any better. As a busy mother running her own business, including shops on Etsy and Artfire, Jess was kind enough to find the time to share a bit about herself and her work. 


What was your background before you began Sparetire Design?

I have my BFA from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University. After graduating, I had the pleasure to work for a very small design company whose focus was on print and web solutions. I then worked for a small multimedia design firm that specialized in designing interactive media solutions for large universities.

What inspired you to start Sparetire Design?

I started Sparetire Design as my freelance business for web and small business design solutions as a way to keep my hands in design as I started my family. The stationery studio bloomed out of a desire to get back into creative design and the print end of design. 


What do you do at Sparetire Design that makes your product top notch?

My products are made with high quality materials, each design is meticulously designed and created and often hand drawn to give it a unique Sparetire Design look. I also believe in quality customer service. My goal is to work with clients to meet and hopefully exceed their expectations.

What is your studio or work space like?

Organized chaos is the best way to describe it! I have my computer work station with lots of sticky notes and wipe boards to keep my day organized. I have a large work station where I cut and assemble stationery items, and a bookcase where I keep all of my in stock paper items, with a record player and some personal pieces that keep me inspired. I also have a cork wall where I have all my open projects pinned up so I can see what stage the project is in at all times.

What or who inspires you?

Music is a huge inspiration to me, I'm a huge fan of the nu-folk scene, Mumford and Sons, Marcus Foster, Avett Brothers to name a few. I am also inspired by nature, many times when I am about to begin a project or hit a road block, I go out for a walk and come back with a fresh perspective.

What are you doing when you are not creating?

Running around and trying to keep up with my three very active children. I also love to see live music and garden. I have a large vegetable garden and perennial gardens that I love to work in.

What advice would you give to couples seeking to make their wedding memorable and special?

Make the wedding day (and marriage) about celebrating your life with those you love. If you have that attitude you can handle anything that gets thrown your way.

What is your best advice of creating a harmonious and happy marriage?
Communicate, even when you don't feel like it and give each other space to be yourselves.
